EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION AND REPROCESSING [EMDR]

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a holistic, evidence-based therapy used to help the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they no longer feel overwhelming. EMDR works by desensitizing distressing memories, beliefs, physical sensations, and emotions while integrating more adaptive information, using bilateral stimulation (BLS) such as eye movements or tapping. Over time, EMDR can help disturbing memories feel neutral and create space for healthier beliefs about the self and the world.

EMDR therapy is recognized and supported by the EMDR International Association, the professional organization that sets training and certification standards for EMDR clinicians.

How Does EMDR Therapy Help?

EMDR therapy helps the brain process and integrate memories that may feel “stuck” in the nervous system after difficult or traumatic experiences. When distressing memories are not fully processed, they can continue to trigger strong emotional reactions, negative beliefs about the self, or physical sensations long after the event has passed.

During EMDR therapy, bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements or tapping) is used while a person briefly brings aspects of a memory to mind. This process supports the brain’s natural ability to reprocess information so that the memory can be stored in a more adaptive and less distressing way.

Through EMDR therapy, many people begin to:

• feel less emotionally triggered by past experiences
• shift negative beliefs about themselves (such as “I’m not safe” or “I’m not good enough”)
• experience relief from anxiety, fear, or shame connected to past events
• develop a greater sense of calm, resilience, and confidence
• move forward without feeling controlled by past memories

As memories are reprocessed, they often begin to feel more distant and less emotionally charged, allowing individuals to respond to present-day situations with greater clarity and stability.

EMDR therapy can be especially helpful for individuals working through trauma, anxiety, difficult life experiences, and patterns that feel hard to change.
